Extended producer responsibility for fishing gear

If you make fishing gear containing plastic available on the market, you are responsible for making sure it is treated correctly when it becomes waste. That covers both commercial and recreational gear.

No volume threshold, but non-industrial producers and those who only fish are exempt.

Gear that contains plastic

Producer responsibility covers fishing gear that contains plastic. It applies whether the gear is used in commercial fishing or for angling and recreation.

Lost and discarded fishing gear is a major source of marine plastic, which is why producers help finance collection and clean-up.

Are you the producer?

You are the producer the first time you place fishing gear containing plastic on the Danish market. Here are four typical examples, but reality holds many more.

You produce gear

You manufacture or assemble fishing gear containing plastic.

Imports from abroad

You bring fishing gear into Denmark to sell it.

Sales to commercial fishing

You supply commercial fishing gear to the fishing industry.

Sales to recreational users

You sell angling and recreational gear to consumers.

Recognise even one? Then you are the producer.

Those who only fish, and non-industrial producers, fall outside the definition of a producer. If you are unsure, we work it out together.

One annual report to DPA

Fishing gear stands apart. You report once a year only, not on an ongoing basis. Commercial fishing gear also requires a financial guarantee.

All yearNo quarterly reporting. Everything is gathered in the annual statement to DPA.
By 31 MarchThe annual statement to DPA. You report the volumes made available on the market and taken back for the previous year.

A financial guarantee is provided for commercial fishing gear. A PRO with a large market share can exempt its members, on the condition that the PRO carries the liability.

Do you have responsibility in several product areas?

One product can trigger several producer responsibilities at once. We cover every product area, with one subscription per area and one combined bill, so you have a single contact for all of it.

Questions about fishing gear

The questions we get most often from companies that are new to producer responsibility for fishing gear.

No, it is voluntary. And note that for fishing gear you file the annual report to DPA yourselves, also as a member with us. In return we remind you of the deadline, and we act as payment administrator, so the authorities' fees come through us on one combined invoice.
